INSPIRE-A-THON with BANANA GIRL FREELEE

Hey Guys!
It’s the weekend! I am so excited to be sharing this INSPIRE-A-THON post with you!
2 years ago I was living in Coffs Harbour and had just become a vegan. I would read and watch every single vegan health blog that I could for inspiration, ideas and motivation. I came across Freelee’s blog and was hooked. Her confidence, controversial humour, glowing skin and knowledge was so INSPIRING!
I watched every single video that she had made, and then anxiously awaited every new one that she posted.
It was Freelee who inspired me to do my very first ever video blog!
Last August I was at a health documentary screening on the Gold Coast and spotted Freelee and her partner Durianrider (Harley) across the room. I was with Rory and he knew how much of a Freelee stalker I was! He urged me to go up and talk to them but I panicked as they walked out of the room. I had seen soooo many of Freelee’s videos that I felt a little star struck!
I went to the bathroom about 5 minutes after my little freak and and spotted them talking to someone by the front door (they hadn’t left yet!). I couldn’t let the opportunity go by so I went and said hello – I was freaking out the whole time!
Since then Freelee and I have become friends and she even made the effort to come to my 21st birthday dinner.
Without her INSPIRATION, I’m not too sure I would be video blogging today.
I hope that she can INSPIRE you as much as she INSPIRES me!
Thankyou so much Freelee, you are such a beautiful, kind hearted, funny, friendly person and a HUGE inspiration in my life!

What is your biggest tip for anyone looking to transition to a healthier lifestyle?

Buy the 80-10-10 Diet book by Dr Doug Graham. Eliminate meat and dairy immediately from your diet and replace with yummy low fat plant foods like fruit, rice, potatoes and pasta. This will give you an instant taste of a healthier body and mind.

How do you take time out for yourself?

The morning bike ride I do about 5 times a week gives me time to reflect and plan. The way I have structured my life these days allows me to take a day off whenever I feel like it and I don’t have to report to anyone, which totally rocks!

What is your ‘go to’ food?

Bananas and lots of them.

What does an average day of food look like for you?

BREAKFAST: 10-15 banana smoothie

LUNCH:
1.5-2kgs of figs (If my tongue doesn’t burn up before I reach that figure)

DINNER: Maybe a salad creation or the recipe below:

BANANA GIRL APPLE STRUDEL
INGREDIENTS:

* 1-2 apples,

* 3 bananas

* 12 or so dates

* Cinnamon

PROCESS:
Take the dates, half a banana and a little grated apple, and cinnamon. Using a “bullet blender”, blend until thick and pasty (not runny). Don’t add water unless you absolutely have to then only add a tiny to get the blender moving. Put paste aside.

* Cut a banana in half then cut in thin slices lengthways (for layers).
* Cut/mandolin apple slices very thinly for layers.

Layer down slices of banana then a layer of apples followed by a layer of BAD paste (banana, apple, date). Repeat to desired height then eat before loved ones dive on it ;)
Optional add cinnamon to paste or sprinkle over top.

You could also blend in strawberries to the paste too for a different flavour.

What is your favourite inspirational quote?

Say what you mean and mean what you say because those who matter do not mind and those who mind do not matter.

What is your biggest tip for having a balanced life?

Carbs, water, sleep. It’s so so important for us to look after our basic physiological needs if we want to lead a balanced life. The 3 most important factors are getting enough carbohydrates in our diet (eg, fruit/rice/potatoes with low fat sauce) and enough water and sleep. The body and mind cannot reach homeostasis if  these factors are not taken care of first, anyone who thinks this is incorrect and does not do it will face a lifetime of emotional turmoil.

What song motivates/inspires you the most?

Actually it tends to change as time goes on but recently YOUR amazing song Sarah, Rhys’s Song. It is so wonderful and heartfelt, I played it over and over again and it gives me goosebumps everytime.

7 Days to Raw and Bikram Day 2

Holy Moly today was a struggle!
We were up again at 5am for meditation and stretching, then it was off to Bikram again for a grooling, sweaty stretch fest!
I did find Bikram easier today than yesterday tho which was a plus!

The hardest part was going to work as I work in a Vegan Cafe. The food we serve is yummy and vegan, but not necessarily the healthiest of the vegan choices. I am surrounded by coffee, vegan chocolate & brownies and burgers all day. These are foods that I used to indulge in when I would binge. My cycle looked like this:
Binge and binge and binge on crappy food
Feel full and tired
Sleep
Wake up with a food hangover
Feel puffy, sick and disgusting
Starve myself and live on only coffee for as long as I could until…
The binge returned!

So it’s safe to say that this detox is really making me realise just how reliant I can be on food, and how scared I can get about going back to that binge cycle.
I was pretty off all day today, and went from being cranky to sad to irritated and couldn’t put my finger on any particular reason.

I found myself really looking forward to my smoothies and meals, and then absolutely inhaling them when I got them. I have realised how fast I eat and have decided to make a decision to work on that :)
Oh! On another note, I want to quickly talk about poop – which I know is taboo, but come on, everyone does it!
Yesterday I was soooo congested and felt really uncomfortable all day! It wasn’t until the end of today that I FINALLY got rid of everything that had been stagnant up in there and I feel amazing! Yay :)

So, here is what I nourished myself with today:

BREAKFAST: Lime in water with Mint Leaves, Green Smoothie
SNACK: Protein Smoothie
LUNCH: Mushroom Soup & Tropical Kale Salad
SNACK: Avocado and Carrot Sticks with a Carrot, Apple & Ginger Juice
DINNER: Corn Soup
WATER: 5 Litres

IMG_20130328_123337 IMG_20130328_123426 IMG_20130328_185013

I can’t wait to see my transformation at the end of this week!
I will be sure to post the link to where you can buy this program when it comes out over Easter :)

I hope you have an AMAZING day
Love Sarah

INSPIRE-A-THON with RORY BLAND!

Happy Thankful Thursday!
Todays’ INSPIRE-A-THON post is from one of my best friends – Rory Bland (aka The Whole Food Dude)!
Rory and I are foodie friends, and will be forever!
I am constantly inspired by Rory! He is honestly one of the sweetest, funniest, most random people I know with a HUGE heart!
The first time we caught up for lunch he made me hold out my hands and close my eyes – when I opened them there was a block of loving earth chocolate staring back at me! From that moment on, I knew we would always be friends :)
I hope that Rory INSPIRES you as much as he inspires me!
(Thank you so much for the contribution Rory!)

Rory

Firstly, tell us a little about yourself:

Wellllll I was born in Tasmania, traveled between Cairns, Tassie and Indonesia for a couple of years, then lived in Indonesia for 6 years before living in Australia since 2001.

Since finishing school 6 years ago, I’ve had over 20 jobs, traveled to over 20 countries and lived in over 20 places.

My dad passed away when I was 17 and I have been on a wild journey of self discovery since!

I’ve been a mango picker, a masseuse, a waiter, a soccer coach, a telemarketer, a health food store dude, a yoga teacher, a vegetarian cook, a photo lab guy, a karma yogi, an entrepreneur, a traffic controller – you name it!

I’ve also studied and dabbled in yoga, psychology, personal development, raw foods, plant based living and internet stuff for about 5 years now.

I discovered my passion for Film & Web Video last year while making some dorky videos for a character called “The Whole Food Dude”. This has lead me to where I am now…

Currently I’m studying Film & TV in Brisbane, and wish to become an actor, filmmaker, videopreneur and hopefully inspire some people to live a healthier, happier and more purposeful life.

It has been a crazy journey, but I am truly grateful for all the experiences I have had, as I am becoming more enriched as the days, weeks, months and years go by!

Oh and I’m 23!

What is your biggest tip for anyone looking to transition to a healthier lifestyle?
Start green juicing, start making green smoothies, find a yoga studio, discover other people on the healthy lifestyle path and surround yourself with them, and work towards discovering and living your purpose in life. Activate your positive vibrations!! Haha is that too many?

How do you take time out for yourself?
I LOVE Yoga Nidra meditations. It’s where you lay on your back for up to 30 minutes and do a series of visualisations/breathing techniques/affirmations and processes. 30 minutes of this can be more beneficial then 2 hours of sleep! Also I enjoy a good YouTube session haha

What is your ‘go to’ food?

Green Juice. Everytime. If other food wasn’t so amazing (and essential for thriving) then I would just drink green juice all day!!! Oh and I LOVE Sprouts!

What does an average day of food look like for you?
Hmmm what I like to eat is…

BREAKFAST: 1 Litre of Green juice followed by 1 Litre of Green Smoothie, Porridge or a vegan protein shake

LUNCH: A nice massive salad with lots of gluten free carbs (like brown rice or quinoa), avocado and a deadly salad dressing

DINNER: If I am lazy i’ll have a smoothie, but I love having warm, heavy stuff at night. So like a rice dish with beans or dhal, I do enjoy a good stir fry… sometimes a pasta dish… orrrr a big sexy vegan pizza!

SNACKS: Fruit, Nuts, Green Juice, Veggies, Vegan Protein Bars

DESSERT: I’m not big on dessert to be honest, but I do enjoy a good raw vegan cake and coconut ice cream… yum yum!

What is your favourite inspirational quote?

I have so many for so many different stages of my life/mood… but at the moment it’s these two:

“Feeling First, Manifestation Second” – Andy Dooley
and

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” – howard thurman

What is your biggest tip for having a balanced life?

Be kind to yourself, keep it as light and free as possible and remember to keep it balanced! Having goals and fun are important too.

What song motivates/inspires you the most?

Ah it depends on my mood again! At the moment I’m really loving de rezzed by daft punk, but generally anything that really gets me fired up. Like Michael Jackson

7 Days to Raw and Bikram Day 1

Hiiiii! :)
I am so excited/nervous to share with you that I am doing a 7 day raw food program!
Today was Day One.

So for the next week I am staying with my good friend Kisane (who is the creator of the program) and we are doing this together! I am so lucky to be able to have her around 24/7 to keep me motivated and hold me accountable for everything I put in my body for the next week!
To be honest, in the last year I have slowly let my diet slip, especially in the last 2 months! I have been eating ‘food’ full of preservatives and CRAP, and have been slowly putting on weight, become tired, slowed down with my exercise and developed an ‘it’s too hard’ attitude.
This is NOT what I am committed to in my life and just goes to show that your health is not a destination, but a journey!
You don’t get to a certain point and think “okay, cool I feel healthy…now I am going to go back to the way I was living and won’t ever have to worry again.”
SO!
For Day One of this 7 Days to Raw program we were up at 5am for a 15 minute meditation followed by stretching and a quick trip in the car to Bikram Yoga.
We had a day trip to Byron Bay planned so we made our breakfast smoothies last night and had them ready to go for our road trip.
Byron was STUNNING and I was so happy to be laying on the beach!

IMG_20130327_104325 IMG_20130327_111506 IMG_20130327_114604
We had lunch at The Conscious Cafe and Elisha (a good friend and the amazing and beautiful owner) made us a HUGE raw salad full of love and nourishment and a detox juice!
On the way home we stopped at the fruit and veggie store and stocked up on fresh produce (mostly veggies) and came home for some Raw Pad Thai for dinner.

It is now nearly 9pm and I am feeling pretty good. I am tired and know that I have to get as much sleep as possible for Bikram again in the morning.
I have had a lot of cravings for sweets today and really realise how much I rely on raw vegan sweets and chocolate to deal with stress and emotions.

BREAKFAST: Lemon Water, Green Smoothie
SNACK: Blueberry Protein Smoothie
LUNCH: Raw Vegan Salad from Conscious Cafe with Detox Juice (Beet, carrot, ginger, lemon, apple, celery)
SNACK: Sunshine Juice (Seasonal citrus fruit and ginger)
DINNER: Raw Vegan Pad Thai
DESSERT: Peppermint Tea
WATER: 6 Litres

IMG_20130327_124116 IMG_20130327_125837 IMG_20130327_125913

I am looking forward to what Day Two has to offer and will bring you more photos and updates for the rest of the week!
I hope that you had a beautiful day and I will chat to you tomorrow.
Love Sarah

INSPIRE-A-THON with KISANE APPLEBY

Hey guys!

Tonight’s post is sooooo damn INSPIRING and I am so excited to share it with you!
My good friend Kisane has had an incredible journey with LOADS of ups and downs.
The transition she has made to a mostly raw vegan lifestyle has completely changed her WHOLE LIFE!
I will let her interview speak for itself, and I KNOW she will inspire you as much as she inspires ME!
(Love you Zaney! xxx)

Kisane ApplebyChanged her life with a Raw Vegan Lifestyle

Kisane Appleby
Changed her life with a Raw Vegan Lifestyle

Firstly, tell us a little about yourself:
Me? Ok, I’m a little zany, I like to have loads of fun and believe that life should be fun and feel good! I love food, I love yoga, I love my partner Fab and I love to travel. I am blessed with a life where it is possible to do and share most of these things on an every day basis!

What do I do on a daily basis? I’m a lifestylist! What’s a lifestylist is what most people ask after hearing that… It means that my passion and purpose is to help people discover their own path to feeling fit, fabulous and full of life by sharing what I learn through social media events and workshops worldwide.

I love creating recipes, cooking & UNcooking, doing yoga and teaching anything to do with Exercise, Nutrition, Detoxification & Development of Self.

It is my goal to inspire and motivate as many people as possible to reach the ENDD results of their dreams when it comes to their Body, their Mind or overall Balance.

I know it’s possible, from personal experience. If I can do it, you can too!

Zane xx

(You can read a little more background here: http://www.bodymindbalance.me/#!about/c8qi ).

What is your biggest tip for anyone looking to transition to a healthier lifestyle?

Be kind to yourself. I don’t mean justify or give up or let yourself out of things you commit to, but be kind and gentle with you, show yourself love and respect in all that you do. We all have amazing days and then other days where we wonder what went wrong? Just keep focussed on what it is you want the most and don’t let what it is you want right now get you distracted.

Small changes can lead to big results!

How do you take time out for yourself?

My two favourite things are my yoga practice, although I teach hatha yoga, I love to attend Bikram classes just for me – it’s 90 minutes alone time the strengthens my mind and my body. The second thing is spending active outdoor time with my partner Fab, who even after a year still sweeps me off my feet and takes my breath away, we love going to the beach, swimming, riding, exploring… Actually most anything outside!

What is your ‘go to’ food?

Pretty much anything that comes out of a blender! Soups, smoothies, green drinks.. I think if I’m stuck for something that’s the easiest and quickest solution… Umm, Can I have two answers? My homemade hummus with a slight twist – LOVE IT!

What does an average day of food look like for you?

BREAKFAST: Green smoothie (Note to you Sarah: I have a free e-book coming up called “Juiced in Case” that will have some great recipes to try and if your readers have any they’d like to contribute they are welcome – it will be a collection of as many recipes as I can collect by March to be shared with as many people as possible, everyone will get credit for their contribution)!

SNACK: Berry Smoothie usually with raw vegan protein powder and supplements like vital greens, acai and macca powder…

LUNCH: Sexy Salads of any description, as many delicious veggies & herbs as possible with nuts or avocado and a delicious homemade dressing! You can really change up it up once you get creative! OR a delicious soup, you can make heaps of raw soups very easily and in winter if you need you can warm them slighty or have a cooked soup.

SNACK: Handful of nuts and dried fruit OR veggie sticks with homemade dips like homemade hummus, orange cashew cream cheese or fruity guacamole. Sometimes a freshly squeezed juice like the “Beet Me Up” which has carrots, beetroot, ginger and green apple! *yummy*

DINNER: This is where my biggest variations come in! Anything from Raw Vegan Creamy pesto pasta or lasagne to cooked stuffed mushrooms with polenta and ratatouille… I love food to create and try heaps of different things so this is my favourite time to explore!

DESSERT: Since a recent detox I have no longer had the cravings for this which is EXACTLY the way I like it, BUT if I do I love choc orange pie or choc chilli pancakes which are both raw vegan or well anything really – can’t say I don’t LIKE the sweeties!

What is your favourite inspirational quote?

For the longest time when I see this question I think of this quote:
“According to aerodynamics, the bumble bee can’t fly, but nobody told the bumble bee”…

And although there are SO many fabulous quotes that I love so much, this one reminds me that no matter what you goal is, go for it!Just because it hasn’t been done or the odds may be against it – doesn’t mean it can’t be done! Live your DREAMS!

What is your biggest tip for having a balanced life?

*ahh* now this question is why I strive to do what I do! :)

Know that a balanced life comes from conscious choices in all the right areas; Exercise, Nutrition, Detoxification & Development of YOU! Work on each area – make one small change at a time until you feel comfortable with it and then pick another area and another change and keep moving forward to the body, mind & life of your dreams!

Remember that you never arrive, what you want will always change you’ll get to a goal and then there will be another one, the joy truly is in the journey not the destination, so be happy now, don’t wait until you get somewhere to feel the beauty of life.

What song motivates/inspires you the most?

*eeek* Do I have to answer this one when asked by an amazing musician? I’m old school! Ok here goes – “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor.

Your favourite foodie photo?

There are sooo many pictures of delicious food out there and my favourites change with my cravings, but apparently today my craving is for something burger like that includes beetroot! Here’s two that made my mouth water!

beetroot burger fooooood

INSPIRE-A-THON with ERWAN COMPES!

Happy Wednesday!
I am currently sitting at the Conscious Cafe in Byron Bay eating a HUGE Raw Vegan Salad and blogging.
I want to introduce you to Erwan, a HUGE inspiration in my life!
Erwan lives in France and is the creator of FRUGIFORCE, a blog which covers everything fitness and raw vegan!
I have never met Erwan in person but feel like I know him and very connected.
(Thankyou so much for being so awesome and for your contribution to my blog!)
I hope that you are as inspired by Erwan as I am :)

Erwan

Firstly, tell us a little about yourself:

Growing up I was always a relatively active kid who played outdoors most of the day, but I only took a keen interest in sports and health over my last years in high school. I started swimming every day, sometimes twice, and joined a rescue swimming program. There I met a triathlete, started running and soon enough I was racing aquathlons, triathlons and marathons.

In summer 2010 I discovered veganism and started experimenting with a fruit-based diet. I am now fruitarian and I am still amazed at how this lifestyle is constantly redefining my perception of health, fitness and general wellbeing.

What is your biggest tip for anyone looking to transition to a healthier lifestyle?

I believe there are 4 major factors: sleep, water, carbs and regular physical activity.

 - Sleep: get early nights (ideally before 9 pm) and sleep as much as possible. Take naps whenever you can.

 - Water : drink enough water throughout the day for your urine to be clear. Up your intake of fresh juicy fruits rich in naturally filtered water.

 - Carb up! Eat more whole foods rich in carbohydrates and low in fat/protein like fruit, dark leafy greens, potatoes and rice. Incorporate more and more fruit meals and never ever leave the table hungry.

 - Find what you love and shift your focus from exercising to playing. Motivation takes care of itself when we have fun!

How do you take time out for yourself?

I spend time outside whenever I can and try to stay active throughout the day: I ride my bike to and from work twice a day including at lunch break. I also regularly get up from my desk to do some push ups or squats.

I am a triathlete and I do most of my training after work (running, cycling, swimming, strength and yoga). This helps me relax considerably, and relieves me from mental fatigue.

Fortunately my work environment is not so stressful and I get to play regularly. We have daily table tennis tournaments with my co-workers.

What is your ‘go to’ food?

Bananas are my staple and I always have ripe ones on hand but my favorite treat is probably durian. Hhmm…!

What does an average day of food look like for you?

The fruit I eat changes with seasons but bananas remain a staple:

BREAKFAST: 10-15 bananas, eating them one at a time or in a smoothie

LUNCH: Banana-date «chip» ice-cream (freeze chunks of bananas then blend them with dates)

DINNER: 2 liters of freshly squeezed orange juice, a large mixed salad (i.e. lettuce, rucola, spinach, tomatoes, lemon juice, avocado)

SNACKS: Bananas, apples, dates, tomatoes, celery, cucumbers

DESSERT: It’s all I eat!

What is your favourite inspirational quote?

Here are three:

“What you are, deep deep down, far far in, is simply the fabric and structure of existence itself.” ~Alan Watts, Philosophere and spiritual entertainer

“Achievement is largely the product of consistently raising one’s level of aspiration and expectation.” ~Jack Nicklaus, American golfer

“If you really want something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find excuses.” ~Jim Rohn, American entrepreneur

What is your biggest tip for having a balanced life?

Stay positive. Do not take circumstances personally and always do your best. Be honest with yourself. Do not antagonize the world, because you are not separate from it. Trust your infinite power and know that change always comes from within. Love others unconditionally and do not expect from them. I live by these principles and find it is a much more pleasant way of existing!

What song motivates/inspires you the most?

You can find my favorite songs of the moment at http://www.hypem.com/watercolossus

Your favourite foodie photo?

Durian

This is a photo of a Durian I ate a few days ago. Also known as the King of Fruits in South-East Asia, this fruit tastes and smells amazing. One of my favorite for sure!

Where can we find you to keep inspired?

I have a Facebook page, Frugiforce. I update it everyday with health, fitness and success tips, workouts and recipes:  www.facebook.com/frugiforce

INSPIRE-A-THON with ADAM FREWER!

GUYS! I am so happy to be blogging again!
How are you? I hope that you’re all feeling healthy and happy!
I have had a huge response to the INSPIRE-A-THON segment and yet haven’t been honouring my word of posting them every Thursday. I want to apologise for that and let you know that I am so committed to being an inspiring contribution to your life no matter what! SO,I am declaring this week an official INSPIRE-A-THON!
Let me introduce to you another AMAZING contributor!
I came across Adam’s youtube channel a couple of months ago and was SO INSPIRED with his story.
Adam really is the perfect poster child for how awesome, fit, toned, energetic and ATTRACTIVE the raw vegan lifestyle is!
I hope you are as inspired by Adam as I am :)

Adam FrewerA Very Fit Raw Vegan

Adam Frewer
A Very Fit Raw Vegan

Firstly, tell us a little about yourself:
Well firstly I would like to say that I am no less or no more than anyone else, I am just a man that has learnt to pleasure that comes with giving back to the world and inspiring others to do the same :)
I am a high percentage raw foods vegan with my own YouTube channel (Rawsome Living) where I teach about health and real nutrition, share my insights to the worlds workings, teach the basics of life, how to stay fit and have good workouts etc. I also showcase my own talents as a stunt man, acrobat , martial artist ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WG4x_pCxjo) and generally just someone that likes movement to help inspire and spread the message in my own way.
I love life, I love my friends and everyone around me, even those that do not love me, because I feel we are all in this together and need to help each other. I have not always been this way, I have had a pretty dark and depressing past, but I do not regret it, everything has a purpose and now I have learnt to greatest gift life has to offer – appreciation.

What is your biggest tip for anyone looking to transition to a healthier lifestyle?
Learn your own reasons for wanting to make these changes in the first place.. I mean really learn them, write them down in detail, emotions involved and empower yourself with them! Because changes must come from within you. After that, educate yourself, listen to lots of people (I find the sources with the least money to be made from their information to be most reliable). Take the parts the work to you. Listen to all, follow none. But if you want to listen to me, focus on your Sleep, Water, Sugar. Fruit & veg, look to nature for guidance, and the specices closest to us in design (Gorillas), what do they do? Get as close to that as possible.

How do you take time out for yourself?
Well everything I do in life ultimately I do because I want to for one reason or another, so I do what I do and am happy doing it. If I am feeling really stressed on that rare occasion I will take myself into nature, climb a tree and meditate or spend time quietly accepting life in the presence of my girlfriend that I love J.

What is your ‘go to’ food?
Sweet Potatoes, although not raw, can be very good in the cold of England.

What does an average day of food look like for you?

BREAKFAST: 10-15 Bananas

LUNCH: 10-15 pieces of another fruit, persimmons, mangos.

DINNER: Large salad with micro greens and either, fruit, sweet potatoes, or avocado.

SNACKS: Dates, Raisens, Other fruits.

DESSERT: I don’t often feel the need, but sometimes, banana icecream with raw carob powder and raisins :)

What is your favourite inspirational quote?
It’s not about how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forwards.

What is your biggest tip for having a balanced life?
Enjoy yourself, and learn to listen to your body.

What song motivates/inspires you the most?
Eye Of The Tiger, Rocky ;)
